Meet the Founder of Flow Cosmetics (Q&A)

Flow Cosmetics is one of Finland’s most loved natural skincare brands, known for combining pure Nordic ingredients with effective, thoughtfully developed formulations.

In this interview, we speak with the founder, Riitta Jänkälä, about how the brand began, what drives the product development, and what makes Finnish natural cosmetics so special.

1. How did Flow Cosmetics begin? What originally inspired you to start the company?

Flow Cosmetics was born out of a personal need to find truly effective and natural solutions for skincare. The foundation lies in an interest in wellbeing, natural ingredients, and a desire to create products that are both effective and gentle. The company was built on a passion for combining traditional herbal knowledge, Finnish nature, and modern cosmetic development.

2. What values are most important in Flow Cosmetics’ operations and product development?

Our most important values are naturalness, transparency, sustainability, and effectiveness. We use the purest and most natural ingredients possible, favor organic materials, and develop our products responsibly with respect for the environment. We want our products to be both safe and genuinely effective.

3. How is a new product created at Flow Cosmetics? Where do the ideas usually come from?

New products often emerge from customer needs, skincare challenges, inspiration from natural ingredients, and new trends. The process begins with an idea, which is carefully developed: active ingredients are selected, formulations are tested, and the product’s performance is ensured. Every product goes through a thorough development and testing phase before launch.

4. Do you have any personal favorite products from the Flow Cosmetics range?

My favorites vary, but I especially like multifunctional and effective products, such as facial oils. They represent Flow Cosmetics’ philosophy well: simple, natural, yet highly effective products. In addition to oils, the Retin Lift Cream is one of my newest favorites, as it combines a serum, moisturizer, and oil in one product.

5. What do you see as the difference between truly natural cosmetics and conventional cosmetics?

Truly natural cosmetics are based on plant-derived, biodegradable, and skin-friendly ingredients. They support the skin’s natural functions without burdening it with synthetic chemicals. Conventional cosmetics, on the other hand, may contain synthetic ingredients that are not always as gentle or environmentally friendly.

6. How is Finnish nature reflected in Flow Cosmetics’ products and philosophy?

Finnish nature is strongly present in everything we do. We utilize pure, northern ingredients such as herbs, berries, as well as plant oils and extracts that grow in Finland. Examples of organic ingredients we source locally include hemp oil, beeswax, and propolis extract, in addition to various berries and herbs.

7. What would you like to say to people who are just getting to know natural cosmetics?

It’s worth starting with an open mind and listening to your skin’s needs. Natural cosmetics may feel different at first compared to conventional products. For example, our scents come from real plants, which may initially feel unusual to those used to synthetic fragrances. However, as you become accustomed to them, natural scents begin to feel pleasant and eventually, artificial fragrances may no longer appeal.

Our product scents are not chosen randomly; each has its own therapeutic effect, as we use genuine essential oils of aromatherapy-grade and organic quality. We receive a lot of positive feedback from customers who have seen improvements in their skin after switching to natural cosmetics.

8. Flow Cosmetics is a Finnish natural cosmetics brand, but the products are increasingly used across Europe. What makes Finnish natural cosmetics special internationally?

The uniqueness of Finnish natural cosmetics lies in its pure nature, high quality, and honest approach. Northern ingredients are unique and highly nutrient-rich. In addition, Finnish design and thinking emphasize clarity, functionality, and responsibility qualities that resonate internationally as well.
